About Emma

Hi! I’m Emma.

First and foremost, I am a practitioner and student of Yoga. Beyond that, I write and scribble extensively, surf as much as possible, and teach only from personal experience.

Educational Background

Under the guidance of Don and Amba Stapleton, I earned my initial 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training at the Nosara Yoga Institute. An interdisciplinary training with elements of Hatha, Vinyasa, Self-Awakening Yoga, and Pranassage brought me to a place where I felt the freedom to explore the aspects of the practice that struck a chord. My biggest take-away? The practice is yours. You alone are the conductor, regardless of the instructor.

I have since trained with many individuals from varying backgrounds, in the yoga world and beyond.

Katonah Yoga theory has expanded my view of the yoga practice as a way to move from first nature to second, to weave theory with the body, and to break out of habits and patterns that do not serve us.

Marlie McGovern expanded my understanding of Restorative Yoga as not just a restful practice, but one of deep work with the Central Nervous System. The elements necessary to move from fight-or-flight to rest-and-digest are an essential part of any yoga practice. The in-depth knowledge Marlie instilled in me elevated my ability to fully receive the benefits of a complete practice. Taking advantage of my background in Neurology and Perception, I’ve used her training as a springboard. An exploration of our internal landscape is an advanced practice, bringing in ease and a renewed sense of stability.

An Old Student of the Vipassana Meditation Tradition, I am immersed in the practice as a way of life. Observation without immediate reaction. Equanimity within each circumstance. A core intellectual and experiential understanding of impermanence. Practicing the core principles of Vipassana has, for lack of a better phrase, changed my life drastically.

My studies in Functional Range Conditioning and Kinstretch have highlighted my focus on the joints and how their configurations, limits, compensations, and freedoms influence the way we move through space. This rooted-in-science application of joint movement has expanded my knowledge of the body in a way that influences everything I do.

My goal is to train and educate myself just as much as I teach others.

Teaching

I aim to move the authority back to my students to empower and observe patterns and habits. Grounded in the knowledge that we are our own internal GPS, we can move in a way that liberates us from outdated beliefs and movement patterns.

My classes reflect a lifetime of movement experimentation, athleticism, and self-study. With the belief that yoga goes hand in hand with curiosity, my classes are dynamic and playful. Expect Vinyasa to be full of laughter and exploration and Restorative to be rooted in awareness and ease. I look forward to seeing you on the mat, the screen, and beyond.
